It's Snippet time again, and here I am with another excerpt from Stevie & Mack, Barista Boys #2. A little context... Stevie is offered a job and a place to live by Bernie, the owner of Barista Boys and naturally he's suspicious of Bernie's motives...
Confusion and mistrust battled with a desire to believe that the offer was real, that for the first time in a year somebody was showing him true kindness. But this wasn't a fairy story and Bernie was no Prince Charming. There had to be a catch.
“Why are you doing this?” Stevie's words were no more than a whisper. He wanted to believe, he really did. He held himself tight and rigid waiting to hear words that would once again show him that there was no such thing as something for nothing. He would have to pay one way or another.
Bernie's impassive features softened as the ghost of a memory flitted across his eyes.
“Let's just say you remind me of someone.” The words, spoken quietly and simply, ached with a sadness that cracked the man's gruff shell.
The thunderclap, sudden, massive and ear-splitting, made them both jump. If Stevie needed a prompt to give his answer, this was it.
“Yes, I'll take it.” A handful of words, that’s all it took, a handful of words and he was off the street.
Bernie nodded. A smile lifted his lips, but didn't reach his eyes which were still clouded with a memory that Stevie couldn't even begin to guess at.
